First let me start with my systemamd 1800xp (normal speed)msi k7t turbo mobo latest bios7200 RPM hddati radeon 8500 (cat's 3.4)My problem:Well my problem is simple, some games stutter a bit. For instance the old game sacrifice has always stuttered a bit for me no matter what settings I played at. Recently I also downloaded the demo from Gothic 2, outdoors it stuttered a bit, to get rid of the stutters I had to pull the texture detail down. Another case of slight stuttering happened in Quicktime (jups thats not a game) when I watched the full screen version of the latest HL2 video (trap town). Now I noticed that when I move my mouse in strike force it moves with a slight stutter, the movement of looking around isnt as smooth as it should be with 90 fps. It's not bad or something but it just doesn't feel real smooth. The solutionThis one totally caught me by surprise. I have been trying to fix the slight stuttering for ages, and agreed with tinkering with my agp settings it removed some stuttering and in other instances the stuttering became less, but it didn't get rid of it completely. I also blamed a fragmented drive, maybe a driver problem somewhere and I dunno what more but nothing seemed to work. Now the real fun part, I just happened to find me a link on rage3d to THIS site. It's a very very interesting read, but more importantly it brings up the cause of it all and gives the solution. It turns out that PCI Latency is the cause for the troubles. Using powerstrip I checked my own setting and my videocard had a latency of 248 while my nic and audiocard had a latency of 32. Basically my videocard hogged the pci bus up to a point where my sound and nic couldn't keep up with the load which causes stuttering. The solution lies in chanching those values. Mine are at the same settings now as those of the author of the article 80-32-64 and uhhh behold.....every single stutter problem just dissapeared. SF feels silky smooth now, Gothic 2 is smooth even when I crank texture details up and have a viewing distance of 120%, The HL2 movie is butter smooth now and even the game with the worst case of stuttering sacrifice runs much much smoother now. In everything I've immediately tested afterwards there was not a single not even the slightest stutter. So basically, peeps just check your PCI latency settings, they didn't only solve some stuttering in games but also in other applications. Just amazing how such a simple tweak fixes so many slightly annoying experiences.
